Windsor Police Remind Pedestrians and Drivers of Crosswalk Safety

Crosswalk Safety_PR Thumbnail

With school starting as early as Aug. 15 for some, the Windsor Police Department would like to remind students and drivers to be alert near crosswalks as traffic increases during the school year. Here are some tips to help everyone stay safe.

For pedestrians:

  • Obey traffic signs and signals.
  • Always use crosswalks when crossing the street.
  • Be alert and watch for traffic before entering the road.
  • Stay on sidewalks whenever possible.
  • Allow vehicles adequate time to stop before crossing the street.

For drivers:

  • Always yield to pedestrians. It’s the law!
  • When approaching a crosswalk, reduce speed and be prepared to stop.
  • Allow enough room between your vehicle and the crosswalk so other drivers can see the pedestrians in the crosswalk.
  • Do not pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk.

In school zones, drivers are asked to pay attention, put down cell phones, and slow down in an effort to keep children safe. The speed limit in a school zone is 20 mph when children are present, except for the 30 mph zone on Main Street. Fines are doubled in school zones during school times.
