Windsor Public Works Prepares for Snow and Ice Season

The Town of Windsor Public Works Department has prepared for inclement winter weather by updating its Snow and Ice Control Plan for 2017-18.

In the event of snow and/or ice, the town focuses on creating a network of connected, clear, and safe roadways for emergency responders, schools, and the public.

“Each snowstorm is unique due to the variables at play — wind, temperature, precipitation rates,” said Streets Supervisor Brian Rowe. “Using the Snow and Ice Control Plan as a guide, we work to provide the community with the safest road conditions possible.”

The Town of Windsor has four priority classifications for plowing snow and applying Ice Buster, a solid rock salt, non-sand, de-icing material. Residential streets will only be plowed with a snow event Priority II, III, and IV, as resources allow.

“During a snow event, we target our efforts on main arterials — main roads, like Highway 392/Main Street — and collector streets — secondary roadways that take traffic from residential streets to main arterials, like 11th Street /Stone Mountain Drive,” Rowe said.

Culs-de-sac and dead-end streets will be cleared during Priority IV and higher snow events, and as resources allow.

Windsor property owners or occupants are responsible for keeping all sidewalks free of snow and ice within 24 hours after accumulation. Residents and private contractors cannot push snow or ice into the street, public rights of way, or sidewalks. Doing so can result in a fine assessed to the property.
