The Windsor Parks, Recreation & Culture Department was recognized as a finalist for the prestigious 2017 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management at the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Annual Conference Tuesday, Sept. 26.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be recognized as a national finalist,” said Eric Lucas, Parks, Recreation & Culture director. “Thank you to everyone who contributed to our nomination this year, as well as Windsor residents for their continued support.”

Founded in 1965, the Gold Medal Awards program honors communities in the U.S. that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition. The awards program is provided by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA), in partnership with NRPA.

Windsor competed against three other finalists in the Class V category — population of less than 30,000 — for grand honors this year.

“While we were disappointed to have not earned the Grand Plaque, being named a finalist at the national level is in and of itself an award,” Lucas said.

“This recognition exemplifies our staff’s continued commitment to providing outstanding diverse, desirable recreation and cultural opportunities in Windsor.”

For more information on the Gold Medal Awards, visit the NRPA or AAPRA websites.
