Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue but proper disposal of unused drugs can save lives and protect the environment. With that in mind, the Windsor Police Department, 200 N. 11th St., will help residents safely dispose of unused and expired prescription medications during National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration and is free to the public with no questions asked.

The public is encouraged to participate in the event as a safe way to dispose of medications. Past disposal methods — flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash — have been found to pose potential safety, health and environmental hazards. And, according to Drug Enforcement Administration, the non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America. The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends, and the home medicine cabinet.

National Drug Take Back Day was initiated through the Drug Disposal Act, which aims to encourage the public and private entities to collect unused medications in a secure and convenient manner. With a focus on medications, the Windsor Police cannot accept needles and sharps, mercury (thermometers), oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, pressurized canisters or illicit drugs.
